Introduction and Properties
Captan, with the trade name Orthocide, is a non-systemic fungicide with preventive and curative effects that is used in the form of a water-mixable powder to control a wide range of fungi. Fungicides in this family, phthalimides, have different points of action. Their toxicity is related to the prevention of the synthesis of amino compounds and enzymes containing thiol groups. The fungicidal effect of these compounds is attributed to the trichloromethylthio part, which, after the toxin enters the fungal cell, prevents the activity of enzymes involved in phosphorus metabolism, such as some oxidases, hydrogenases, and also coenzyme A.
